WHO is Senior Patient Advocates and HOW did we get started?

Over 11 years ago, Founder and President Terry Bay found herself as many do, the primary caretaker of her ill and elderly parents. The healthcare system and their Medicare coverage was incredibly difficult to understand and few resources existed to assist them. The time and needs of her parents ultimately led her to leave her position as a District Sales Manager for GlaxoSmithKline, a large pharmaceutical company. Learning the Medicare system first hand allowed Terry to gain a wealth of knowledge and she began volunteering at Senior Centers, churches and other locations, in effort to assist those who needed guidance. Terry’s educational background, professional experience in the healthcare system and years of advocating for family and clients eventually led her to start a business which now specializes in a combination of insurance consulting and patient advocacy.

Terry herself is not a doctor, nurse or pharmacist, but she understands and speaks “patient language” to help clients understand the cumbersome process and terminology used by the medical and insurance professionals. This knowledge allows Terry to help her clients make the best decisions when it comes to their personal situations. Senior Patient Advocates do not sell insurance; however, we are licensed insurance consultants who can provide direction when it comes to coverage. We advocate for our clients and educate them on Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, employer group and retiree health insurance, prescription coverage, long term disability and other related insurance products.

Senior Patient Advocates staff annually trains with both the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and Social Security and regularly attends conferences and training focused on healthcare coverage. We regularly provide training and courses that focus on Medicare coverage, Part D Prescription coverage and more. SPA is members of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA) and the National Association of Healthcare Advocacy Consultants (NAHAC).

The knowledge and understanding that Senior Patient Advocates have about Medicare and other health insurance products has helped our clients in a significant way – as true patient advocates. We’ve helped clients both locally and long distance directly or via their families, friends and loved ones regardless if they live at home, or in assisted living or nursing homes. SPA partners with healthcare providers throughout the region to help clients access, understand and navigate the healthcare system in a meaningful way.
